Point in Time
Point in Time
According to HUD, a Point in Time Count (PIT) is an actual count (or reliable estimate) of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on ONE night in the last 10 days in January.
Required information in the PIT includes:
* Sheltered and unsheltered adults, children, and unaccompanied youth.
* Number of households with dependent children.
* Subpopulation information: Chronic Homelessness, Substance Abuse, Mental Illness, Domestic Violence, Veteran Status, HIV and Unaccompanied Youth.
HUD uses the PIT information for the Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) and CoC information on www.hud.gov. More importantly, PIT counts provide snapshot data to communities and can help to:
* Identify Service Needs and Gaps
* Measure progress toward 10 year-plan goals and eliminating homelessness more broadly
* Assist in the development of programs that meet the specific needs of the homeless population
* Provide communities with an accurate picture
