The Role of the Individual

While the number of causes of poverty, the root cause of homelessness, may be troubling and intimidating to some, it also highlights the fact the skills we normally do not associate with combating homelessness can play a positive role in that fight. For example, a Change.org article explained how architects can help fight homelessness. The article described how architects and urban developers can apply their job skills to fighting homeless by creating sustainable and affordable housing.

More broadly, the article reminds us that we all have something to contribute to the fight against poverty. We must not confine ourselves to thinking that poverty is simply the result of individual laziness. In reality, a combination of social forces often converge on an individual’s life and force them below the poverty line. Likewise, to limit yourself to believing you have nothing to offer the fight against poverty is also incorrect! The number of forces that cause poverty, and variety of effects it may have on an individual or family’s life, mean we all bring something useful to the table in the fight against poverty. Creativity and innovation in how our society attacks poverty is essential, not only to expand the possibilities of how we may work against poverty, but also to help expand the impact of our efforts.
