Advocacy

Working to coordinate the efforts of member agencies and local, state, and national government departments, the Homeless Alliance approaches homeless and poverty issues from all angles. Using its local research, the Homeless Alliance advocates for and works to actively engage homeless and low-income people in policy-making. It researches national best practice models and works towards their implementation to end homelessness in Buffalo and Erie County.
The Homeless Alliance believes that the root cause of homelessness is poverty. To that end, the Alliance supports the efforts of those who work to eliminate poverty through policy-based change, community coordination, and citizen empowerment. Once a year, the Homeless Alliance participates in a state-wide lobbying day in Albany with a focus on welfare reform, affordable housing, food security, and health care.
The Homeless Alliance also coordinates an annual community-wide education and advocacy effort known as the Buffalo Poverty Challenge.
