Education

At the Homeless Alliance, we believe that homelessness is inextricably linked to poverty. While many factors contribute to homelessness, poverty is at its root. We believe that communicating this idea is central to our mission as an organization. As such, we engage in a number of educational activities and outreach initiatives.

Presentations:

The Alliance offers educational presentations on poverty and homelessness to schools, service providers, businesses, religious organizations, and community groups. During sessions, Alliance staff offer an overview of poverty and homelessness in our community, as well as details on national trends and data. Presentations can be tailored to specific group interests and concerns and are ideal for all age groups.

HAWNY can also provide more in-depth presentations for school groups. HAWNY staff can lead lessons, mini-units and workshops focused on poverty and homelessness with students in grades K-12. Such activities can be aligned with state standards in Social Studies and Literacy (ELA).

Experiential Learning:

A unique event developed by the Homeless Alliance is the Poverty Challenge. The Poverty Challenge is a 3-day solidarity event aimed at raising awareness about poverty and its effects. Participants live on a poverty budget for three days, engage in reflective practice, and participate in a number of supporting events. This year’s event was held the week of May 24, 2010.
