COVID-19 Survey Analysis Findings Are Here

On June 1st, 2020, WNY emergency shelters were seeing a 49% increase in occupancy over the same date in 2019. Observing this trend, the Homeless Alliance of WNY created and sent out a client survey to the emergency shelters in Western New York. Persons at the shelters were asked by staff to fill out and return the survey. The survey questions ranged from basic demographic information to specific questions regarding how COVID-19 and other factors led to their homelessness.

Data captured from these surveys as well as from the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) have helped us understand the effect that COVID-19 has had on emergency shelter occupancy. Through the survey results, we are beginning to see how COVID-19 is impacting people experiencing homelessness, evidence of racial disparities, and the resources that are needed to re-house these individuals and families.
