Are you in a housing crisis? Call 2-1-1.
2-1-1 WNY is a centralized human services referral provider for the Western New York region. 2-1-1 offers different forms of help for homeless people. In Erie County, they operate after-hours DSS hotel placements.
This includes referrals for assistance with:
- Housing and Emergency Services
- Employment Services
If you are experiencing homelessness, please note: the Homeless Alliance of Western New York is a technical assistance agency. We do not provide direct-service, we are not a shelter, and the best we can do is point you to the resources provided by direct-service agencies. Our specialty is statistics and policy. 211’s specialty is telling members of the community where to get help and we highly recommend calling them for referrals over us.
New York State has a right-to-shelter obligation as the result of a court interpretation of the New York State Constitution. The counties are charged with fulfilling that state obligation. As a consequence, many shelters primarily take DSS referrals. If you are a person experiencing homelessness, we advise you first visit the homeless teams of your respective Departments of Social Service, usually a distinct department from the ones you’d apply for mainstream benefits from.
Homeless people are considered residents of the counties they are currently in.
There are also shelters that take people without the DSS referral. These include:
Buffalo City Mission (single men) at 100 East Tupper Street, 716-854-8181
Cornerstone Manor (single women and women with children) at 150 East North Street, 716-854-8181
Little Portion Friary (single men and single women) at 1305 Main Street, 716-882-5705
Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission (single men) 1317 Portage Road, 716-205-8805
Lockport Cares (single men, single women, married couples, persons with children), 192 Genesee Street, 716-939-0926 admission line.
